On viewThis highly finished bronze is based upon one of Mazzuoli's earliest works, a marble altar frontal in the church of St. Mary of the Stairs in Siena. Throughout his career, the artist was preoccupied with representing the body of Christ after his deposition from the cross. He created numerous terracotta sculptures of this theme, and a contemporary biographer of Mazzuoli wrote that the artist kept a marble version in his home, which he used for his private devotions.
During the 1670s, Mazzuoli worked under the great Roman sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini, whose Countess Matilda is also in the Museum's collection. The eddying flow of the draperies that distinguishes this Deposed Christ reveals the unmistakable influence of Bernini.
