Label TextSoth’s photographic portraits reveal a tangible intimacy and an amazing level of comfort and rapport between the subject and the photographer. He has been described as creating “a photographic career out of finding chemistry with strangers.” According to Soth, “When I photograph a person, I’m not photographing their soul. I’m photographing their exterior features. And I always feel like I’m photographing not only them, but I’m photographing the space between myself and them.” It is not only the object of his gaze that is important to his works, but also the space that separates and surrounds the subjects as a means to emphasize their singularity and often isolation. Soth’s images in Bull City Summer reveal the solitary nature of baseball—the players in the outfield and the fans who choose to sit near them.
