Label TextThe love of the Kuba people for complex geometric patterns is especially evident in their carved wooden boxes, which sometimes feature a human face in the design as well. Both functional and beautiful, Kuba boxes held objects of high value, including grooming implements for men like shaving knives or camwood (tukula powder mixed with palm oil) for reddening the skin, or small personal items such as combs and jewelry. Both men and women use this aromatic red powder made from ground wood as a cosmetic for hair and skin.

Kuba and Bembe works share geometric patterning in wooden works as well as textiles and skirts. This is because these cultures are geographically close to one another, and exchange between these artistic traditions is common.
