On View
Not on viewThese smooth forms, with edges so crisp they seem almost carved out of the work's surface, float mysteriously in space. Viewers may enjoy figuring out how Ralph Coxx has manipulated the shapes, which combine the biomorphic and the mechanistic. The same forms have been repeated, but in different colors and shading and in different orientations (reversed, upside-down, turned sideways). All the while, the bulges, wedges, and globes engage in a subtly humorous dialogue. The play between two and three dimensions, between the organic and the geometric, enlivens this elegantly precise painting.ProvenanceCreated North Carolina, ca. 1972; collection of the artist; sold to NCMA, 1973.Published ReferencesThirty-Fifth Annual North Carolina Artists' Exhibition (exhibition catalogue) (Raleigh: North Carolina Museum of Art, 1972), cat. no. 17, illus.
