Label TextWith an extraordinary talent for storytelling and an evident ability to establish rapport with those he photographs Alec Soth embarks on road trips throughout the U.S. with an 8 x 10 view camera. The result from four years traveling throughout the South is a highly compelling series entitled Sleeping by the Mississippi. With beautiful sensitivity Soth’s images present people and landscapes on the periphery of American society.

In Patrick, Palm Sunday, Baton Rouge, Louisiana the almost shy smile of Patrick, dressed up in his Sunday best and with visible pride, glows with honesty and warmth. Soth’s image invites viewers to make a personal connection based not on familiarity with the context of the image but with its engaging realism.
