Label TextVonnoh was among the first wave of American artists who embraced impressionism. He enthusiastically adopted the practice of working out in the open (en plein air), and his best pictures have that feeling of a first indelible impression, jotted down in quick strokes of color.

The French village of Grez-sur-Loring, near the forest of Fontainebleau, was a popular colony for American, British, and Scandinavian painters. Vonnoh spent many seasons at Grez, setting up his easel and canvas in the fields and by the roadside or river. He often favored overcast days when the muted light softened colors and forms, inspiring a mood of quiet contemplation.
