On View
Not on viewIn the 1940s Raymond Jonson and Ed Garman were prominent members of the Transcendental Painting Group, a New Mexico-based association of abstract and nonobjective painters who sought "to stimulate in others, through deep and spontaneous emotional experiences of form and color, a more intense participation in the life of the spirit." Coincidentally, both Jonson and Garman were originally interested in theater design, and their carefully calibrated compositions could be interpreted as exercises in dramatic geometry: the forms, lines, and colors functioning as actors on stage (or screen).ProvenanceEstate of the artist (Jonson Gallery, University of New Mexico), 1982; with Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, NM, 1988; sold to Fannie and Alan Leslie, Palm Springs, CA, 1995; bequeathed to NCMA, 2006.
