Ceremonial staffs are among the most important insignia of office for Luba kings, chiefs, and other titleholders. The motif of Janus heads (two heads facing in opposite directions) featured on this spear staff is a reference to twin spirits named Mpanga and Mbanze, who preserve and protect the sacred history and traditions of Luba kingship. The metal shaft at bottom facilitates placing this staff in the ground, where it stands upright, a metaphor for qualities of the chief. The iron itself is symbolic, speaking of the durability and stability of the leader.
