On View
Not on viewThe Dan believe that the dark forests are inhabited by invisible spirits, who wish to intervene in human affairs. If a spirit wants to appear in physical form, it may visit an individual in a dream and instruct him to assemble and wear a masquerade, consisting of mask, headdress, and bulky raffia and cloth costume. With its tubular eyes and angular, projecting forms, this mask belongs to a type that represents fearsome forest spirits with aggressive masculine characteristics.Published References"Acquisitions," North Carolina Museum of Art Bulletin 12, nos. 1 and 2 (December 1973), group of objects on long-term loan listed 68.Exhibition HistoryRaleigh, NC, North Carolina Museum of Art, "African Sculpture from the Hanes Corporation," February 11-August 15, 1972.
