On View
Not on viewJudd carefully used the number of dots on the sides of the dice to create a visual illusion of positive and negative space. The result is a black-and-white-toned portrait. His largescale dice installations are designed to emphasize the importance of the figures in the portraits. Judd challenges monumental European paintings with the novelty of dice and images of Native peoples yet still privileges the tradition of immortalizing historical figures in large-scale portraiture.
