Label TextOften incorporating found objects in her mixed media works, Sarah Cain pushes the notion of abstract painting into uncharted territories. Investigating color, line, collage and composition on a confined scale, Cain maintains and reveals the identity of her dollar bill “canvases” with small areas of negative space. These small jewel-toned and gilded paintings are like tiny, illuminated, monetary manuscripts. In their repetitive form (over the past five years, Cain has made over one hundred single dollar bill paintings) they also act as dairy or journal entries that capture the passage of time.
