Label TextThe ornate blade of this adze proclaims the status of the chief who displayed it. The copper wiring—a precious commodity found only in this region of the continent—and blade ornamentation mean it could not be used as a wood-carving tool. Instead, it was carried by a chief who rested its blade over his shoulder with the handle extended forward so that both sides were visible.

Iron is extremely difficult to forge, making the design elements achieved by this artist even more remarkable. Note the ways in which the Songye metalsmith has twisted the metal together in the interior of the axe. The open space weakens the physical strength of the blade, but this artistry creates a potent statement of power.
