Label TextCaro wanted to make small sculptures that would not be seen as reduced versions of his monumental works. His solution was to design the object with a tabletop in mind. He ran at least one element of every piece below the tabletop on which it was placed and oriented the work to the table edge.

The subtle variations in color and finish of the steel’s surface, the slightly uneven character of the edges, and the deliberately rough treatment of some of the welds give the sculpture a pictorial quality. It is almost as if Caro has made a threedimensional version of an abstract expressionist painting.
