On View
On viewThe slightly skewed lines and blotchy areas, or “bruising,” as the artist calls it, undermine the geometric patterns formed by the stencil. This act emphasizes the importance of the artist’s hand in a creative process that would otherwise seem purely industrial or machine made. Vena draws inspiration from minimalist artists like Frank Stella, whose painting Raqqa II (1970) can be seen in West Building, and Ronald Bladen, whose sculpture Three Elements (1965, fabricated 1966–76) can be seen in West Building’s North Garden.
