On View
On viewA Maya figure sits on a jaguar skin-decorated throne. He wears an elaborate costume that includes a wing-like element under his arm and onto his back. Extended in front of him is a long tubular-shaped trumpet, an instrument commonly used to make music for elaborate public dance performances. The hieroglyphic inscription surrounding the figure eludes decipherment. In contrast to many hieroglyphic texts painted on pottery vessels, this seems to be a non-literate text that conveys the sense of writing but does not represent Maya words.Published References"Recent Acquisitions," (exhibition catalogue), North Carolina Museum of Art Bulletin 13, nos. 1 and 2 (1975), cat. no. 219 (incorrectly numbered asG.75.16.4).
