Label TextThis fascinating Coptic icon represents the continuation of a religious practice in existence on the continent for millennia—Christianity. Notice the identifications above each figure and the signage above Jesus: the Latin INRI is written IRNI. This is not an error but instead reflects the rules of Arabic script, written from right to left. Above the cross is a triangle symbolizing the Holy Trinity with the eye of Horus or Ra—a powerful symbol of protection in ancient Egypt—depicted inside it. Given Christian symbolism of the all-seeing God, it is a fitting comparison.

This blending of Christian, Arabic, Coptic, and Egyptian language and iconography highlights global connectivity and the religious fusing of diverse beliefs and practices that remains a constant feature of African culture today.
