On viewAlthough this figurine may represent a female (notice the tiny breasts), Olmec-inspired art of highland Mexico frequently depicts chubby male figures with similar small breasts. Also characteristic of this early style is the rendering of the face with slanted, crossed eyes and full lips. This figure wears a topknot of painted red hair or a red head wrap. Because of the lack of any clothing or other adornment, it is believed figures such as this originally may have been clothed, but due to the wet climate of highland Mexico the clothing did not survive.Published References"Recent Acquisitions," (exhibition catalogue) North Carolina Museum of Art Bulletin 13, nos. 1 and 2 (1975), cat. no. 197, illus (b-w).
