Label TextAt Black Mountain College, Albers reconstituted many of his classes from the Bauhaus, including material studies, color theory, and drawing. Projects exploring the essential characteristics of paper, cardboard, wire, and leaves encouraged experimentation and sharpened students’ visual senses.

In Homage to the Square, his seminal body of work consisting of over one thousand paintings and prints, Albers explored what he understood to be color’s magical ability to change its appearance depending on context. In these works, as in his classroom exercises, Albers invites us to better understand and experience color through our observation of its changing behavior in different situations.
