On viewTo begin a consultation, Baule diviners steadily beat a small iron gong. As the mallet strikes, the diviner goes into a trance. During a consultation the diviner speaks through the voices of nature spirits to make pronouncements on individual and community matters, such as the cause of illness or drought. A miniature rendition of a sacred mask adorns the implement, adding aesthetic appeal to the consultation.Published References"Acquisitions," North Carolina Museum of Art Bulletin 12, nos. 1 and 2 (December 1973), group of objects on long-term loan listed 68.Exhibition HistoryGreensboro, NC, Weatherspoon Art Gallery, September 9-30, 1973.
