On View
Not on viewLargely self-taught, Thomas Ball created a number of impressive sculptural portraits of national leaders, including senators Daniel Webster of New Hampshire (also in the Museum's collection) and Henry Clay of Kentucky. The artist’s presentation of both men is direct and honest—too honest for some critics, who wished for a more heroic, more “Roman,” portrayal of their statesmen. Compare the rumpled realism of these men with the Cicero-like portrait of their colleague John C. Calhoun (whose bust by Hiram Powers is also in the Museum's collection). However, times and taste change. When was the last time an American senator wore a toga?
